Hair Help: Graduation

Today is my graduation... which means spending about 2 hours in a silly looking hat that will ruin my hair for pictures after.

For my high school graduation, I straightened my hair (like I always did at the time)  and it looked okay, except after the ceremony I had a big dent in the back of my head! I guess it wouldn't really ruin it... but it does put a (dare I say it?) dent in your style!

A shot from high school... I was so blonde!

Lately I've been almost 100% curly. But, as I tried on my cap and gown, I realized my curly, diffused hair was too big for the hat! It poofed out at the bottom and flattened the top... another no go!

So, what's between curly and straight. That's right, wavy!

I chose to do a classic pin curl wave. I found a great tutorial on Vintage Vixen! I did, however, roll my long bangs away from my face to add a little modern touch to it. I also didn't alternate my wave pattern, so it would be more of a traditional finger wave.

Unfortunately, when I unrolled my hair it was a mess! I guess I didn't roll it right... but the curls looked great. The brushed out part? Not so much.

So I rinsed my hair and repinned it, but this time I did more of a halo around my head. Then, I blasted it with a blow dryer. To make it a little more modern, I carefully took out the pins and diffused it with a little scrunch.

much better! (even though the lighting is awful)

Quick Life Update

Well, I've done it! I finished my undergrad degree - WOO HOO! Here are some important life updates that will relate to future posting, especially since I have a lot more time to write (and more topics to write about!)

*I graduate Friday afternoon! In lieu of my usual series "Skin I'm In," I'll be doing a special feature that evening about graduation- my dress, ceremony, and most importantly my hair! Trying to do something with this glorious mane and also sticking it under a not-hair-friendly hat is a challenge - and one I'm willing to tackle!

*I've gotten a big girl job! I've kept it a little hush hush, as it's in the preliminary stages, but I got my first paycheck yesterday so I figured now would be a good time to make it official.

*With jobs comes a dress code. While my workplace is fairly casual, I'm still coming to terms with pieces of my wardrobe that have turned out not to be workplace appropriate (at least, by my own standards.) Expect a post on managing a limited wardrobe!

*Finally, I've decided to join the Daughters of the American Revolution! I was just matched to a chapter, so I'll be sure to post about my experience becoming a member! I think it's very important to connect to your roots, whether it be from the creation of America, Ellis Island, or a recent journey to a new and better life.

What have y'all been up to? I know plenty of you have finals- study hard and good luck!

1 skirt, 3 ways!

It's easy to underestimate the basics... like a black pencil skirt! I have tons of cute tops and dresses, but very few "business bottoms."

I had an interview for a big girl job the other day... and I was baffled with what to wear! My classic suit was at home and the attire at the office was business casual. I wanted to fit in, look cute but also look pulled together.

I thought about buying a whole new outfit, and then I stumbled across something at Target that made my day: the simple, black pencil skirt.

A wardrobe classic that I just happened to be missing! It'd be perfect- I could wear it with almost any color and any top.

I thought I'd share my frugal find and some of the outfits I tried on for my interview! I ended up choosing a peach blouse similar to the dotted blouse.

1 skirt, 3 ways!

Mossimo® Women's Pencil Skirt -Black

Plus, there are SO many more outfits you could create with this... add a blazer, a button down or a simple top with a statement necklace. I can't believe this was missing from my wardrobe!

Thesis Update: This is WAY harder than I thought.

So, I'm still working on my thesis and it still makes me want to die a little on the inside.

I know I've worked on papers this long or longer before, but man this takes a lot out of you. I'm one of those people who likes to accomplish a task in one sitting, or at least a segment of it, and senior thesis is not a place to do that.

Part of the reason I'm so stressed out about my thesis is I feel like I don't have enough time to work on it and get involved. I've been setting my alarm every day to make sure I spend at least 1 hour on it a day, but once I piece together all of those pieces, I feel like I'm just stringing thoughts together, with no rhyme or reason.

That's what frustrates me the most... there is absolutely no way I could sit down and write this paper in a day and come back to it the next day and edit and move on.

This thesis is like a wedding cake. You can't just throw it together and carve down, you have to build it up.

First, you create a strong and steady base - your literature review. Then, add a few more cakes on top of it to make it hearty and proud - like your methodology, observations and findings.

Then, lay down some icing- an intro, conclusion and transitional paragraphs, pipe the edges with your format and finally at your cake topper- the abstract- at the very end.

Lord help you if you think you can just toss this together!

As much as I want to do this project all at once... there is no way I, or anyone, could. That's why it's a semester-long class - you need ample time to complete it.

This last semester has been a total work out of large, continuous projects, which I think I'm no good at. So you can imagine my frustration! And with the due date quickly approaching, it's time to make sense of all my segmented pieces.

Wish me luck! Are you better at longer, drawn out projects or quick and efficient tasks? Share with me in the comments below!

BIG news!

My sorority is celebrating "Big Appreciation Week" this week, I think because they just felt like it.

Okay by me, but all of my littles have left school - two transfers and an alum! Of course, I got some sweet notes, but I didn't feel like I was left out or anything, even if I hadn't.

But there is BIGger news.... I love my sorority, it's true. Two years of Panhellenic Exec board really solidified what I thought was true. Phi Mu is where I truly belonged. I firmly believe in the values it holds and I am so proud to be involved in an organization like it.

But, I passed up the opportunity this winter to apply for a Chapter Consultant position. After the application closed, I immediately regretted it.

But guess what? The application re-opened yesterday!

I just know this is a sign from Mary, Mary and Martha... so of course I started the application!

Thanks you guys!

Thesis Update: I'm Dying

Man oh man, this thesis will be the death of me!

My sorority house flooded this weekend after some roof repairs fell through. I gave myself a break Thursday from homework, which carried into Friday, and early Saturday morning the house flooded during a rainstorm.

Luckily, we had another dorm to go to, and student services came immediately. A disaster relief team was called to handle the emergency as well. I was definitely not happy about moving out 5 weeks early, but that's another story for another day.

Saturday morning, we had our annual egg hunt, so while packing up the house, we also hosted a philanthropy event! Talk about stressful! Then, that night was our annual formal. Sunday we all finally got around to unpacking our things... and we're still packing up our common rooms.

Geez Louise! So much going on. I ended up loosing 4 days of studying and work in all. Which is not what I wanted. Plus the weather has been FREEZING and we've seen snow flurries for two days. Morale is low.

Luckily, I got an extension for my first draft of my thesis, and I'm powering through the week to get all of my assignments done. I turned in an article this morning, a PR project is in its final stages, a podcast is in its beginnings and due in two days, I have three other articles due Thursday, and of course, my thesis draft!

There's a lesson here folks... take advantage of the time you have! You need time to yourself, true, but be careful! Time can slip away from you quite easily, and you can't plan for disasters and emergencies.

Pride

It's important to be proud of yourself. Your accomplishments are things to be proud of - you worked hard for those! You earned the right to be proud.

Being proud isn't always bragging, and it's not always as obvious as a pack of lions strutting about.

I've come to realize that I am a very proud person, and I'm not sure I like it. Sometimes, my pride can turn from achievement into elitism.

I've been the editor for my campus's online student newspaper for about a year now. I was chosen for the position, which made me proud that my hard work paid off.

However, we had to rebuild the site. I have taken plenty of web building classes, but I was rusty. I built up the bare bones and kind of just left them.

Having a site that was okay but not amazing was something I was not proud of. I think it showed too, and I think that's why I had difficulty getting other students to write quality work.

When you think of something as a permanent work in progress, you'll never accomplish your final goal. And no one likes to look incompetent by asking for help.

But the truth is, I was a little rusty. I can manage a site no problem, but it's been a while since I really dove in a worked on it.

After I had heard a local newspaper had checked our website and thought it was mediocre, I was upset. I had tried to get an internship at that newspaper.... did my lack of work and being too proud to ask for help ruin my chances for that internship?

So I finally gave up the goat. I needed help on this site. I emailed the school's web coordinator and my advisor. I refuse to graduate and leave the site "just okay."

So what's the moral of this story? It's okay to be proud, but there is always room to learn.

Have you ever had to come to terms with being too proud? Share with me in the comments below.

Motivation

With the crazy weather and post-spring break blues, it's hard to stay motivated!

I've gone back to making daily lists, but it's still not enough. Where did my motivation go!? I seem to have developed a horrible case of senioritis.

While I'm sure scientists are struggling to find a cure right this second, in the mean time, I'm stuck with a lack of will power. A big list and "no time" to spend on it. And by "no time" I mean there isn't a time I want to do anything.

So how can I, alongside the class of 2013, beat this case of the senior blues? So far I have little results, but I do have one solution...

Instead of procrastinating by fiddling on Facebook or twiddling on Twitter, I'm cleaning my room, doing dishes, and sorting through my clothes.

I've justified these actions by noting that a clean room is a happy room, and it's easier for me to work in since I'm not thinking about how dirty it is; clean dishes mean I can cook whenever I so desire and do not fall to the tempts of crappy food; and of course, I have a ton of clothes, and I need to clean out my closet anyway.

Of course, this isn't a substitution for actually doing my work, but it's nice to break in between activities. This, along with power study sessions at the library are slowly getting me through my last semester in school.

I'm slowly getting things crossed off my list. I'm sure I can tackle it all - and you can to.

What do you do to improve motivation? Have any tips? Share with me in the comments below!

The end of spring break

It's Sunday, which means my last spring break is coming to a close. I didn't go to the beach or travel, but I did quite a bit.

Friday through Sunday two of our close family friends visited us! It was two moms and two daughters - I had seen Mom #2 recently but I hadn't seen her daughter, my childhood best friend, in over ten years! We did shopping, wine and massages. It was a great way to kick off my break!

Monday I cleaned my mom's bathroom- I traded her a clean bathroom for a shirt. Tuesday I managed to laze about with the puppies and I started a sewing project!

I went to my dad's classes on Wednesday to do some homework outside the house. Afterwards, we went and renewed my license. No more "Under 21" bordering my picture!

And no more 16-year-old me duping restaurant servers.

Thursday I attempted to do more homework and met with my internship boss! Later, I started another sewing project. This time I used my boyfriend's mother's embroidery machine so my stitches were extra sassy.

Friday, one of my best friends and sorority sisters, Kegan, came over for a weekend sleepover! We spent the day at my boyfriend's house sewing, watching TV, snacking and generally enjoying each other's company. Later, another sorority sister joined us.

Boyfriend's brother models the letters I made!

Why a weekend sleep over? Because Saturday we attended the Atlanta Dance Marathon for Children's Miracle Network and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta!

FTK!

In total, $16,169.69 were raised for CHOA and CMNH. My team raised $1915 and of that I raised $215!

Sunday, Kegan and I slept in and had a late breakfast. Then, three more friends, their pups and my boyfriend came over. Kegan and I did homework while we all snacked and chatted. We had a delicious Sunday dinner together!

Now it's Monday.... sigh! Back to the ol' grind! I don't really want to go back, I'm having so much fun here! And that means it's only seven weeks until... graduation. *dramatic music*

Small towns and shoes: An internship update

As you may remember from earlier last week, I had an interview/meeting with another internship!

I was definitely nervous at first- I got off to a rocky start. But after meeting and talking, the position turned out to be just what I was looking for!

Originally, I was worried that doing an internship linked to another place I had already worked would have made me look like I couldn't find another place to intern. It made me nervous- would I look like too small town with this on my resume?

I asked my mom - guru of all things business - and she told me that actually  the opposite is true. It shows that you were wanted back, which is definitely a good thing.

And if you wanted to get technical... I'm interning for a show instead of the company. So that distinction can help if anyone attempts to peg me with small town syndrome.

I also thought that it would just be radio-centered, like the last internship I had been offered. But after meeting the host, it turns out I'll be doing a lot more than just radio work!

Not only do I get to work on a radio show, I also get to work on the website and social media. I might even be able to do some writing!

Needless to say, it's almost like this internship was made for me. I get to do all the things I wanted to do, it's local and it starts immediately!

There's a lesson to be learned here, as always. The shoe could be a perfect fit, but how will you know until you try it on?

Internship Update!

Recently, I was offered a position for the internship I had previously interviewed for. If you remember, I thought I didn't do well during the interview. Surprise!

Unfortunately, the Internship starts in March and I graduate in April... so I'm not entirely sure how that will work out, or if it will at all.

I continued my search to be safe. I found an internship for a radio show at a local station. The internship would be much closer and start immediately.

I'm meeting with the woman tomorrow to discuss the internship!

I'm a little nervous - I've definitely done a few things wrong so far. For starters, she called me to talk during an assessment day lecture so I accidentally denied her call! Talk about awkward.

Then I waited a while to email her back, because I was having second thoughts.

Learn from this! Even if you start getting nervous and having second thoughts, don't sabotage yourself. I don't think it hurt me in the long run, but it wasn't a good strategy.

This isn't a formal interview, but I want to look nice. I purchased a bauble necklace today from a local boutique and plan on wearing a button-down and khakis to our meeting. A safe outfit with sassy accessories will make your personality outshine your outfit.

Pay Day

Unfortunately not the candy bar, pay day is a mythical day that comes rarely as a college student.

I manage my school's online newspaper, so I get paid $150 per month to read, edit and pass stories through to post every week.

I typically like to save $50 from each of these paychecks, but last month was a struggle. I had all that I needed, but I did not like seeing my bank account dwindle, so this month I started out by saving $25.

It's hard to predict money. It fluctuates, for one. Some months there are really important things to pay for, some months there are only cute clothes to pay for. Sometimes you want to spend all of your money on sushi. It changes so frequently and it's hard to plan!

So how do you plan by ear?

1. Save something. Like I said earlier, I prefer to save $50 each month, but even half that can be helpful later.
2. Withdraw cash for food. I always get annoyed when I see a $3.25 charge for a snack. I withdraw about $20 and use it for food. If I need more, I'll get more. This also keeps unnecessary snacking down.
3. Decide if you want to save more. How did you first week go on your paycheck? If you didn't spend a lot, consider moving more money into savings. Even $10 per week in between checks can make a difference.
4. Treat yourself. If you haven't needed to spend your money on bills, food, or surprises, consider treating yourself to a little something. A piece of cake or a new necklace, it's important to keep you in mind.

Sharing my Internship Interview Experience

So I tried to keep this under wraps originally, as I am (unfortunately) superstitious. But, I had an interview on Friday in downtown Atlanta!

Here's the short version of my day Friday:
*I came home Thursday night to ensure a full night's rest. No crankiness allowed!

*I woke up nice and slow, but I forgot to eat before I left, which was not a good idea because then I did get cranky. Fail! Later, however, I discovered it was a great idea, because my stomach didn't start knotting while I was waiting.

*I wore a classic grey pinstripe skirt suit with a bright blouse, comfortable shoes and hose. I did not bring a coat and I definitely should have! I also brought a designer bag that matched my suit and my father lent me his fancy leather portfolio to match.

*I took the MARTA - a public transit subway. It gave me a lot of time to think, relax and prepare, as well as keeping me from stressing out about where I was going!

*I arrived at the interview a few minutes early - always a good plan! But I didn't actually get to interview until about 30 minutes after my time! Luckily, the company had a TV in the lobby, so I got to watch sitcoms while I waited!

*I got called in to interview. I tried my hardest to be polite and normal, but later admitted to the interviewer that I was trying really hard. I was so nervous about making a better impression that I sort of lost myself. I was lucky to open up as the interview continued.

*I brought extra resumes and an air check, which my interviewer was happy to have.

*As I left, my interviewer said, "Great interview" and shook my hand. Even if I didn't get the internship, I felt accomplished. How often does one get complimented when they are one in hundreds!?

*I finally had a bite to eat. I had some delicious spaghetti, prepared by a Italian man with a thick accent. He was very nice and made me smile! It tasted better afterwards anyway.

*Hopped back on the MARTA and headed home. What a day! By the time I was off the track and in the car, four hours of my day were spent downtown.

What can you take from this?
*Dress comfortably. But don't get too crazy - even though I wished I had been in brighter colors, I think I made a better impression in my classic suit.

*Bring everything you can with you. An aircheck, resume, writing sample, anything - just in case. They may not ask for it, but wouldn't you rather be prepared!? (I have to thank my dad for that one- he made sure I had everything before I left!)

*Be yourself. Yes, impressions are good. But don't overdo it - I accidentally convinced my interviewer that I preferred one radio station over the other, when it was actually the opposite! It took me so off-guard that it threw my whole train of thought off.

*Be careful not to over-focus. I totally forgot my favorite artist(s), all because I was trying to prepare myself for harder questions!

*Speaking of.... I was not expecting to be asked conversational questions! Don't forget, you're a person.

Lilly Pulitzer Spring Line!

The Spring Line is up for viewing! Most things won't ship until March, but what do you think?

I wish there were more patterned dresses, similar to the original shift. It's their signature piece, and while there was a few I wish there were a little more!

I did like these few pieces though... and I am looking for a graduation dress!

I must have the gingham one!! Love the peplum.

Keyhole neckline or bateau!?

I'm a sucker for jacquard.

Luckily, the fun blazers and jackets redeemed the lack of patterned shifts.

Did Lilly read my blog? This is how I want to dress for work!

The capris and tops are pretty cute too... Oh, a trip to Lilly at Phipps couldn't hurt, could it?

Bye, paycheck. It was nice knowing you.

Thesis Update: Topics

Plan Positive: Organizing your planner

I recently purchased a new planner recently. I liked my old planner, but it was a little too small and I didn't realize that I would have so much stuff to put in it! So I transitioned into something roomier.

Did you have any doubt that it would be Lilly?

I've developed this system to organize my planners. It involves stickies, highlighters and book marks.

First, I have a highlighting key
Green - Class or Assignments
Blue - Work or Meetings
Orange - Extracurricular Activities
Pink - Phi Mu or Greek Events
Yellow - Fun things

Busy as a bee!

Then, I add stickies for busy days.

I turn sticky notes into daily to do lists!

I use the larger calendar in the front of each month for special events, weekend long plans and birthdays.
Sometimes I like this view because it makes me feel less busy

Finally, I use two bookmarks. A paperclip in between the large calendar and the week I'm currently on. The second bookmark holds the previous months in place. In theory, I could get one large binder clip and ditch the other bookmark (but first I need to find some pretty ones! Any suggestions?)

Pretty sure I found this clip on the floor of my room.
It doesn't have to be fancy! But I'd like to find a nicer one.

Rain, rain, go away!

It's raining here is Georgia today. In fact, it's been raining all week!

At Brenau, the campus used to have a trolley run through the streets. The tracks have since been paved over, but the streets are really high up and the gutters are really low, meaning there are always puddles to jump in!

I purchased a pair of pink rain boots when I came to Brenau, but last summer they sprang a leak. I was so sad! They went with everything! (I can't even find a picture of them! I have one somewhere....)

I purchased a new pair eventually due to a surprise storm during work - I was wearing a favorite pair of leather flats and refused to ruin them!

Today, I bought a new pair of boots. The second pair I had were outrageously patterned and was too much for my typical, already patterned outfits. So instead, I looked for another solid color.

This time, I picked a shorter pair in a berry color. The selection at my local Target was a little picked over (it is the rainy season!) but I found what I was looking for.

I was kind of looking for these guys - not solid, but how cute are the critter whales!?

I've always liked Hunter rain boots, but I can't justify purchasing $135 worth of rubber! Yes, they're cute, but it only rains once in a while down here, and after college, I'm not sure how much I'll wear rain boots! But since I'm not getting the expensive pair, maybe I'll get the Critter Whales too!

Do you own rain boots? What kind? Share with me in the comments below!

Desk for Success

I have a thing with desks. I love them, but my desks always look totally crazy.

I like having a specific workspace, but no matter how hard I try it always turns into a crazy mess! I have a love/hate relationship with desk drawers: I love shoving random stuff in them, but I hate not being able to find anything!

I had to come up with a solution... but so far, the only one that works is not using my desk drawers.

And with all of my papers slowly stacking up on the corner of my desk, underneath textbooks and clipboards, I realized it was time for a change.

The 'Desk for Success' Scavenger Hunt

Before... not so bad, but needs improvement!

Find: Things of Sentiment
Yes, I know the little notes your sorority sisters slipped under your door are sweet, but if it just says "Love, Jane" reconsider keeping it. Does it bring you lots of smiles? Consider taping it to the wall or put it on your memory board. Is it a gift tag and you use the gift every day? Toss the tag.

Secondly, is it on your desk because you were sitting there last when you looked it? Probably. Find a new home for your sentimental notes!

Find: Receipts
Remember why you kept your receipt. For online shopping slips, I keep them in case I need to make a return and because I paid with my card. For regular receipts, I keep everything except cash receipts.

I started storing receipts in a little accordion folder to keep them from going everywhere. After a year, I toss the receipts.

Find: Homework and Assignments
These are a challenge, but not with file folders. I simply stuff them into a manila folder with the class labeled on them and forget about it... until I need it. Then, all I have to do is open my desk drawer and rifle through the stack of folders. (Hint: Leave current assignments in a neat stack or paper tray)

A good use for a desk drawer!

Find: Chargers, cables and jump drives, not in use
I got Pinterest-y with this one. I had a fantastic Voluspa candle that smelled like peaches, so it was easy to burn down. I didn't want to throw away the black and gold tin (which just so happens to be my school colors) so I froze it and scraped out the remaining wax.

It looks like a fancy candle... but it's secretly my junky cables and chargers!

Then, I rolled up my cords and squashed them into the jar. Ta Da! A fairly attractive tech keeper. I plan on doing this again with all of my Voluspa candles and the pretty tins they come in!

Find: Cables and electrical cords, in use
This one is tough. Cables are unattractive 99% of the time. I usually just stuff the cables behind my desk and hope for best.
Sigh.

I was given a picture frame early this year and it's just the right size to cover up my surge protector.

Much more pleasing to the eye and still totally functional!

Find: Trash, snacks and bottles.
Sipping fresh juice out of your new Lilly tumbler? Great, but it's still sitting on your desk. Awkward... go wash that sucker and put it with the rest of your dishes.

Got a water bottle from your last work out? Is it empty? Drain it or drink it, then recycle the bottle. Trash from an earlier snack? You know what to do.

Did you find everything?

Can you find the little whales that surprised me while cleaning?
Can you also spot the two drinks I haven't finished?

What does your desk look like? Do you have your own organization system? Share with me in the comments below!
